Toe Tags is the third episode of the seventh season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. This episode follows the team as they investigate a series of murders from two different angles – the present day and the past.
The episode starts with a woman's body being found in the present day in a trash can. The team begins an investigation into her death and quickly determines that she was murdered by someone she knew. As they delve deeper into her life, they discover that she was involved with a man who had recently been released from prison. They begin to track him down and question him, but he denies any involvement in her death.
In the meantime, Grissom is called to investigate an old case from the 1970s. The remains of several victims have been discovered in a landfill, and Grissom is tasked with identifying them. He works closely with a retired detective who had worked on the case when it was first opened. As they examine the remains, they discover something that had been missed in the original investigation – one of the victims had a metal plate in their head. This leads Grissom to believe that this victim might have been a soldier.
Back in the present day, the team continues to investigate the murder. They discover that the victim had a son who was born during her time in prison. They track down the son and question him, but he denies any involvement in her death. They then discover that the man she was involved with had been using her to get back at a man who had wronged him in the past. The team confronts him with this information, and he confesses to killing her in a fit of rage.
Meanwhile, Grissom and the retired detective identify the soldier from the metal plate. They discover that he was a deserter from the Vietnam War and had been living under a false name for years. They eventually track down his family, who had thought he was dead. The family is able to provide DNA samples to confirm his identity, and Grissom is able to give them the closure they had been hoping for.
The episode ends with the team wrapping up both cases – the murder in the present day and the identification of the soldier from the past. While the two cases are vastly different, they are both solved using the same careful attention to detail and dedication to the scientific process that has become the hallmark of the CSI team.
