The CSI team investigates the mysterious death of a man found on a golf course, which leads them to the world of competitive eating. The man, later identified as a professional eater named Kyle Vance, died from complications related to his enormous stomach capacity. While investigating the case, the team learns about the extreme measures some competitive eaters go to in order to be successful, including using drugs to stimulate their appetites and increase endurance.
Meanwhile, Grissom becomes obsessed with a cockroach he finds in the lab and begins conducting experiments to learn more about its behavior. This subplot provides a lighthearted counterpoint to the disturbing details of the main case, and also serves to illustrate Grissom's fascination with the minutiae of the natural world.
As always, the team uses cutting-edge forensic techniques to piece together the clues and identify the killer, and the episode ends with a satisfying resolution to the case. Along the way, we see the different strengths and personalities of each member of the CSI team, and how they work together to solve even the most challenging cases. Overall, "What's Eating Gilbert Grissom?" is a thrilling and thought-provoking episode that showcases the best of what CSI has to offer.
