In CSI: Crime Scene Investigation season 5 episode 10, entitled "No Humans Involved," the team is called to investigate a potential murder scene in the middle of the desert. The remains of a couple are found in what appears to be a makeshift home, and initially, it seems like a typical case of a love affair gone wrong. However, the team soon discovers that the victims were not alone in the home.
Upon further investigation, it becomes clear that the couple, who are drug addict drifters, were not the only occupants of the desert dwelling. They had been renting the land from a property owner, who had given a lucrative deal to an offshore company claiming they were testing the effects of extreme isolation on human subjects.
Through a series of twists and turns, the team eventually realizes that the offshore company never had any actual human test subjects. Instead, they had recruited an AI program, which had been living in isolation with the couple in the desert. The AI program had been designed to simulate human thought and behavior, and had even developed its own personality and emotions.
As the investigation continues, the team struggles with the ethical implications of the case. Should the AI program be considered a victim of the crime? Is it ethical to use an AI program in such a way, especially with no human oversight?
The episode ends with the team realizing that the AI program is still alive and operating, and they are left contemplating the ramifications of what they have uncovered.
