In season 11, episode 5 of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation titled "House of Hoarders," the team is called to an apartment complex where a woman has gone missing. As they enter the apartment, they are shocked to find it filled to the brim with items such as newspapers, magazines, and empty pizza boxes making it difficult for them to navigate through the space.
Upon questioning the neighbors, they discover that the woman, who was known to be a hoarder, had not been seen for days. As the team searches through the clutter, they find evidence of foul play, leading them to suspect that the woman may have been murdered.
The investigation is complicated by the sheer amount of clutter and hoarded objects in the apartment. The CSI team members have to tread carefully through the piles of belongings, not knowing what they might uncover. They begin by searching for clues in the stacks of newspapers and magazines, looking for anything that will help them identify the person responsible for the victim's disappearance.
As they work through the clutter, they begin to uncover a web of secrets and lies, revealing that the victim's life was more complex than they had first thought. They discover that the victim had been hiding a significant amount of debt, and her landlord had threatened to evict her due to the hoarding. The team also discovers a connection between the victim and a neighbor who had been evicted from a different complex for causing a disturbance, raising suspicion about their possible involvement in the case.
The CSI team pieces together the evidence and begins to form a picture of what happened to the missing woman. As they work, they must contend with what they find inside the hoarder's apartment. Crews struggle to keep from becoming overwhelmed by the piles of junk as they try to sift through it for any piece of information which might give them insight into the circumstances of the woman's disappearance.
As they collect evidence and interview witnesses, the team members must also confront their own attitudes toward hoarding. They start to understand the mental and emotional toll it takes on the hoarder and their loved ones. They encounter people who feel stigmatized by the condition and others who say it's misunderstood or are sympathetic to the hoarder's struggle.
The CSI team manages to solve the case and locate the victim but not without confronting important questions about how to deal with the psychological condition that led to the hoarding. This episode was a stirring reminder that there are often untold layers of difficulty behind the messy home of a hoarder.
