Cruise of the Gods is a television movie which premiered on BBC in 2002. This comedy-drama stars some of Britain's most celebrated comedic talents, including Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan, David Walliams, James Corden, Rachel Shelley, and Russell Brand. The movie is set twenty years after the cancellation of the cult science-fiction show "Children of Castor," which had amassed a dedicated fan base. The show's cast and crew reunite on a cruise ship chartered by a wealthy businessman named Duncan (played by Walliams), who is a major fan of Children of Castor. Horace (played by Brydon), the former fan club chairman of the show, now leads a mundane life as a security guard at a caravan site. However, he jumps at the chance to take part in the cruise when offered.
The plot follows the reunion of the cast and crew of the show, who have since moved on to different aspects of the entertainment industry. Jeff Monks (played by Coogan), the show's former lead, is now an arrogant actor desperate to shake off his association with the show. Additionally, he is upset that his former co-star, Claire (played by Shelley), is now a successful actress in Hollywood, while he has struggled to find work that he considers fulfilling.
As the cruise ship sets sail, the cast and crew encounter an amusing set of adventures, including being pursued by fans and partaking in parties onboard. Duncan organizes a gala dinner to commemorate the show's finale. The dinner serves as an opportunity for the cast to confront each other about past resentments and to reflect on the impact their work had on the fans.
Throughout their time on the cruise, the characters must deal with their feelings towards their association with Children of Castor. Horace still idolizes the show and its actors, whereas Jeff is embarrassed by it. Additionally, they all confront their desire for fame and the impact it has had on their careers and relationships.
One of the highlights of Cruise of the Gods is the performance of Russell Brand, who plays a fan of the show called "Dennis." He follows the cast and crew everywhere, constantly making inappropriate comments and causing problems. Though he is a minor character, Brandâs comedic timing is spot on.
Overall, Cruise of the Gods is a loving tribute to classic sci-fi and the dedicated fans who keep its memory alive. The blend of comedy and drama works well, and the talented cast brings their characters to life with their unique quirks and personalities. The movie is well-written and entertaining, and a must-watch for fans of British comedy.
