Crowded is a comedy TV series that revolves around a modern family. The concept of this show is created by Suzanne Martin and produced by the Clarkson Bros and James Burrows. The first season of this series aired on March 15, 2016, and consists of 13 episodes.
In the pilot episode, we are introduced to the central family who is about to face some significant changes in their lives. Mike and Martina Moore, parents of three children, have just sent their eldest daughter, Shea, off to college. They are excited to finally enjoy an empty nest alone, but things quickly change when their daughter comes back home unexpectedly to complete her degree online.
Adding to the crowded house, we meet Martina's eccentric and opinionated father, Bob, who randomly decides to move in with them after selling his house to his next-door neighbor for double the price. Then, Mike's younger brother, Ethan, who just got divorced, also moves in to crash with them. It quickly becomes apparent to the entire family that their home is going to be a bit too crowded.
The first episode begins with Mike and Martina trying to adjust to their newfound freedom as empty-nesters, exploring their interests, and looking forward to romantic weekends away. But their peace is quickly shattered when Shea comes crashing back into their lives. Shea's original plan was to move into the dorms, but she's forced to stay home due to some unforeseen circumstances. This means Martina has to cancel a much-anticipated cooking class with her friend, Alice.
Meanwhile, Bob shows up unannounced, announcing his news about selling his house and waiting for their approval to move in. Mike and Martina are stunned and can't believe their house would be able to accommodate him. On the other hand, Shea is excited about having her granddad around the house, but the rest of her siblings aren't too thrilled.
The final straw is when Ethan, Mike's younger brother, comes home to tell his family that his wife has left him. Mike and Martina try to be supportive, but their patience is wearing thin. After all, they love their family, but all of them living under one roof is a bit much.
Throughout the episode, the characters deal with their emotions and try to figure out the best way to make this new living situation work. Martina, who's a real estate agent, suggests her father buys a condo, but he doesn't like that idea. Eventually, the family decides to make a pact that they will all work on compromising and adapting to this new, crowded family dynamic.
The pilot episode sets up great character dynamics, hinting at what's to come throughout the season. The writers introduce each character well, showing their quirks, personalities, and how much they love and struggle with each other. The dialogue is playful but also provides insight into each character’s motivations and dreams, making for an enjoyable viewing experience.
Crowded’s first episode is a perfect introduction to this unique family's journey and how they navigate their way through a crowded house. The pilot sets an entertaining pace, is well-written and well-acted, and shows the viewer that this network sitcom has the potential for a long run.
