In Crossing Jordan season 1 episode 13, titled "Miracles & Wonders", the team of medical examiners in the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner takes on a new case that is both puzzling and tragic.
The episode begins with the brutal killing of a man named Bobby Collins. Jordan Cavanaugh (played by Jill Hennessy) and Nigel Townsend (played by Steve Valentine) are called to the scene of the crime to collect evidence. When they arrive, they find that Bobby's wife, Mary, a woman with Down syndrome, witnessed the murder. Mary is in shock and can't provide much information, but Jordan notices that she's wearing a small silver necklace with a religious charm on it.
The case takes an unexpected turn when it is revealed that Mary has been having visions of the Virgin Mary. She tells Woody Hoyt (played by Jerry O'Connell), the homicide detective assigned to the case, that the Virgin Mary appeared to her and told her that her husband was going to die. Mary's visions have made her somewhat of a local celebrity, with people flocking to her house to witness her miraculous abilities.
Jordan is skeptical of Mary's visions and believes that there's a rational explanation for what's happening. But when another murder occurs and Mary again has a vision about it, Jordan begins to wonder if there's something supernatural going on.
As the medical examiners continue to investigate the case, they encounter a range of characters with their own motivations and beliefs. Some, like Mary's mother, believe wholeheartedly in her visions and see them as a sign of divine intervention. Others, like a local priest, are more skeptical and believe that Mary is being exploited by those around her.
The episode is filled with twists and turns as the investigators try to piece together what happened and who is responsible for the murders. Throughout it all, the show's trademark blend of humor and darkness is on full display, making for a compelling and entertaining hour of television.
Overall, "Miracles & Wonders" is a standout episode of Crossing Jordan that showcases the show's strengths as a crime procedural with a supernatural twist. It tackles complex topics with sensitivity and depth, all while keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Fans of the show won't want to miss it.
