As Ed Ramsey locks in the materials for his next ritual killing, Alex Cross finds the witness whose testimony can stop Ramsey in his tracks. On a road trip with his son Damon, Alex has a chance to reconnect with his kid and to make sense of the gap Maria's death has left in their lives. Just when Alex is about to close in on Ramsey, something unexpected happens.

Ramsey hosts his annual birthday party at his house. All of the D.C. glitterati turn out, including Cross and his lady friend, Elle Monteiro. But Cross suspects that Ed Ramsey is the serial killer he's been searching for, so he uses the party as cover to conduct an illicit investigation.

Cross gets Emir Goodspeed's case officially declared a homicide, while Ed Ramsey is forced to setup a new location to perform his kills. Cross's family encourages him to return to a family karaoke tradition they haven't practiced since his wife's death. But when Cross finally relents, their family bliss is broken by a horrific act of intrusion.

Cross learns that the person threatening his family is related to a criminal he helped convict, Deirdre Nolan. But Deirdre has been dead for years, so who is attacking his family? Then Cross has a major win in the Goodspeed case. He raids a home connected to the killer. Though the killer escapes, Cross discovers a scrapbook that conveys the killer's mission: to transform innocent victims into photo-perfect images of America's most famous serial killers. Goodspeed is just the tip of the iceberg.

Vanessa Norris believes she has evidence that could expose Emir Goodspeed's killer. So she leaves her child with her sister and goes into hiding -- hoping that she can bring the truth to light. But Vanessa is hunted by the killer, Ed Ramsey; his henchman, Bobby Trey Abellard; and by Cross, who hopes he can catch and protect her. Cross gets a clue from Vanessa's son to "ride the white horsey." Meanwhile, Ed Ramsey seizes his next victim: a young art aficionado named Shannon Witmer.

Detective and psychologist Alex Cross is still reeling from his wife's murder when young D.C. Civil Rights activist Emir Goodspeed is found dead. Some of the evidence points to suicide, some suggests foul play. As Cross digs into Emir's final moments, he bumps shoulders with the highs and lows of D.C. society.
