The episode "True Night" from Criminal Minds season 3 revolves around the team's investigation of a series of brutal murders in a small town in Maryland. The murders are unique in that they all occur on nights when there is no moon in the sky, leaving the town residents feeling uneasy and fearful.
The team arrives in the town and begins their investigation, but quickly realizes that the residents are not very cooperative and many of them seem to be hiding something. Hotch and Rossi interview the local sheriff, who appears to be covering up details about the murders and denies any connection between them. Meanwhile, Morgan and Prentiss interview the families of the victims, but the grief-stricken family members offer little help.
The team eventually uncovers a connection between the murders and a group of hunters who gather in the woods on nights when there is no moon. They discover that the hunters have been using a special type of bullet that leaves little evidence behind and have been committing the murders as part of a twisted ritual aimed at appeasing their god.
As the team races against time to stop the hunters from carrying out another murder, they must also deal with the unstable psyche of a young woman who believes she is the key to stopping the murders. Reid and Garcia try to understand the woman's delusions and help her come to terms with the traumatic event that triggered her obsession with solving the case.
In the end, the team successfully apprehends the hunters and prevents them from committing another murder. They also help the young woman receive the help she needs to cope with her trauma and move on from her delusions. The town is left to heal from the horrific events, but the team knows that the experience has left a lasting impact on all those involved.
