In the first episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's fourth and final season, titled "I Want To Be Here," we catch up with Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) as she starts a new chapter in her life. After struggling with her mental health and sobriety in the last season, Rebecca has decided to leave behind her old life in New York City and move to West Covina, California, in search of a fresh start.
The episode opens with Rebecca arriving at her new apartment, which she has decorated with a "West Covina" theme to convince herself that she made the right decision. She quickly meets her new neighbor, a bubbly and outgoing woman named Heather (Vella Lovell), who shows her around town and introduces her to some new friends.
Rebecca also reunites with her ex-boyfriend Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III), who now works at a local sports bar. Despite their messy past, the two seem to be on good terms and even share a duet together about their shared love of West Covina.
As Rebecca tries to adjust to her new life, she struggles to fill the void left by leaving her high-powered job and the exciting Manhattan lifestyle she once had. She decides to try a few new hobbies, including volunteering at a local youth theater and taking up roller skating.
While on a roller skating outing with Heather, Rebecca runs into another old flame, Greg (now played by Skylar Astin). The two had a tumultuous relationship in the past, but Greg seems to have turned his life around since they last saw each other. Rebecca is initially wary of getting involved with him again, but they bond over their shared experiences in Alcoholics Anonymous.
Meanwhile, Rebecca's best friend Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) is still struggling with the aftermath of her husband's affair and trying to balance her family life with her demanding job at a law firm. She's also facing a difficult decision about whether or not to run for mayor of West Covina.
As the episode comes to a close, Rebecca realizes that she's still not sure what she wants out of life, but she's excited to be exploring new possibilities. She has a heartfelt conversation with Greg about their past mistakes, and the two part ways on good terms. Rebecca then reunites with Josh once more, and the two decide to explore the town together.
Overall, "I Want To Be Here" sets up some interesting storylines for the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. As Rebecca tries to find her place in West Covina, she'll have to navigate her complicated relationships with Josh, Greg, and her other friends and acquaintances. With its trademark blend of humor and heart, the show promises to deliver a satisfying conclusion to Rebecca's journey of self-discovery.
