Ganymede Elegy is the tenth episode of Cowboy Bebop series. The episode takes its title from the setting where the story takes place, the moon Ganymede. In this episode, the viewers get to see a glimpse of Jet's past.
The story begins with a flashforward to Jet's younger years, where he is seen as a detective in the ISSP (Inter-Solar System Police). After solving a case, he is seen celebrating with his partner and his girlfriend. However, it is revealed that his girlfriend was involved in the crime, and she betrays Jet by planting a bomb that damages his arm and kills his partner.
Fast forward to the present, Jet receives a message from his love interest of the past, Alisa, who is currently residing in Ganymede. Jet decides to investigate the issue and returns to the place where he has some poignant memories with Alisa.
On reaching Ganymede, Jet comes across a bartender named Bob, who was a former ISSP detective himself. Upon meeting Jet, Bob reveals that Alisa is currently working as a performer in his bar. Bob informs Jet about Alisa's deteriorating health and also about her recurring debts, which have left her vulnerable to exploitative individuals.
Jet hesitates to meet Alisa initially but finally comes face to face with her. Alisa and Jet have a heartwarming reunion and spend the night reminiscing their past. However, things go sour the next morning, and Alisa goes missing. Jet decides to investigate on his own and finds out that his former partner, who he presumed was dead, is still alive.
The missing person case takes Jet to the outskirts of Ganymede, where his former partner, Fad, and his partner have been hiding all these years. As Jet reaches their hideout, he confronts Fad and learns the truth about Alisa.
Fad reveals that he has been working for a notorious malefactor of Ganymede named Morgan, who had a score to settle with Alisa. Morgan was convinced that Alisa had cheated him in a card game and demanded a considerable amount of money as compensation. Since Alisa couldn't pay, Fad, in a desperate attempt, used Jet's sentiments towards Alisa as leverage. Fad wanted Jet to take her back to his ship, as he was aware that Jet would do anything for Alisa.
Jet, in the end, realizes that Alisa had been deceiving him by acting as if she had fallen ill. In truth, Alisa had a hidden agenda behind calling Jet to Ganymede. She had been using Jet's emotions to help her escape from Morgan.
The episode concludes with Jet's realization that he had been hustled and he must let Alisa go. However, a glimmer of hope shines through, as Jet and Alisa cross paths one last time.
In conclusion, the Ganymede Elegy episode provides viewers with powerful insights about Jet's past and his valiant efforts to overcome his personal demons. The episode showcases the complexity and depth of Jet's character, which adds another layer to this already profound series. Furthermore, the episode brings its viewers the scintillating visuals, evocative soundtrack, and excellent storytelling that is characteristic of Cowboy Bebop. All these factors make Ganymede Elegy a must-watch for any Cowboy Bebop enthusiast.
