In the third season of the beloved Canadian sitcom Corner Gas, episode 10 is titled "Safety First." The episode was originally broadcast on December 12th, 2005.
The residents of Dog River find themselves in a tizzy over safety concerns. Brent (played by series creator Brent Butt) and Hank (Fred Ewanuick) team up to make a public service announcement urging people to drive safely. Meanwhile, Karen (Tara Spencer-Nairn) is tasked with organizing a safety meeting for the town.
As the town prepares for its safety meeting, Lacey (Gabrielle Miller) realizes that she doesn't have a smoke detector in her home. She calls local firefighter Davis (Lorne Cardinal) for help. But when Davis and his fellow firefighters arrive, they discover a much bigger problem: Lacey has a gas leak. The firefighters quickly shut off the gas and evacuate Lacey from her home.
Meanwhile, at the safety meeting, Karen is determined to get everyone on board with her safety initiatives. She brings in an expert to speak to the group, but the expert turns out to be a robots rights advocate who insists that robots have the same rights as humans. Needless to say, the townspeople are not impressed.
As Brent and Hank film their public service announcement, they find themselves getting distracted by the antics of their fellow residents. Oscar (Eric Peterson) and Emma (Janet Wright) drive by with a huge piece of farm machinery, causing Hank to stop the filming to gawk at the machine. Then Wanda (Nancy Robertson) shows up wearing a daring outfit that distracts both Hank and Brent.
Back at the gas leak site, Lacey is grateful to Davis and his team for saving her from what could have been a tragic situation. She invites them back to the Ruby Cafe for breakfast, where they regale her with stories of their job.
Later, at the safety meeting, Karen's enthusiasm for safety starts to wear off on the townspeople. Oscar suggests they form a neighborhood watch group, while Brent proposes that they install a fake speed bump to slow down drivers. But when they all realize they need to spend money to make the town safer, they become less excited about the idea.
As the episode wraps up, Lacey installs a smoke detector in her home and promises to be more safety-conscious from now on. And Davis and his team stop by the gas station to let Brent and Hank know that Lacey's gas leak was caused by a faulty stove. The episode ends with the townspeople gathered at the Ruby Cafe, reflecting on their newfound appreciation for safety.
Overall, "Safety First" is a fun and lighthearted episode of Corner Gas, showcasing the quirky characters and everyday life in the fictional town of Dog River. With its mix of humor and heart, the show remains a beloved classic of Canadian television.
