Corner Gas Animated season 1 episode 1, titled "Bone Dry," is the first of the animated series based on the popular Canadian sitcom of the same name. The episode follows the residents of Dog River, Saskatchewan, as they deal with a devastating drought that has left their town bone dry.
The episode opens with Brent Leroy, the owner of the Corner Gas station, lamenting the fact that he hasn't had a customer in hours. He and his best friend Hank Yarbo (who is also his employee at the gas station) engage in some witty banter, which sets the comedic tone for the rest of the episode.
We then see Hank on a construction site, where he has been hired to build a pool for a wealthy couple in town. However, due to the drought, the couple has called off the project, much to Hank's disappointment.
Meanwhile, at the Ruby Café, Lacey Burrows (the café owner) and her assistant Emma Leroy (Brent's sister) are discussing the effects of the dry weather on their business. Lacey has been forced to ration her water usage, while Emma has resorted to serving sandwiches on stale bread due to the lack of fresh ingredients.
Later, Brent visits the local farmer, Oscar Leroy (his father) to discuss the drought and the impact it has had on their crops. Oscar is uncharacteristically optimistic, stating that he believes the rain will come soon and everything will be okay. However, Brent is more skeptical.
As the day goes on, the residents of Dog River continue to feel the effects of the drought. Wanda Dollard (the gas station's other employee) is forced to refuse a customer's request for a car wash due to the water shortage. Lacey's boyfriend, police officer Davis Quinton, is seen patrolling the streets on a bicycle due to the lack of gas for his police car.
Finally, the episode reaches a climax when a raging fire breaks out in a nearby field due to the high temperatures and dry conditions. The residents of Dog River band together to fight the fire, using whatever resources they have at their disposal.
In the end, the fire is put out and the town is grateful for the heroism of its residents. However, the drought still persists, leaving the future of Dog River uncertain.
Overall, "Bone Dry" is a strong start to the animated series, perfectly capturing the quirky humor and lovable characters that made the original sitcom a hit. The episode also tackles timely themes such as the effects of climate change and the importance of community in times of crisis. Fans of the original show will no doubt enjoy seeing their favorite characters brought to life in animated form, while newcomers will be drawn in by the show's charming setting and relatable humor.
