CopyCat Killers is a true-crime series that depicts horrific crimes inspired by Hollywood movies and TV shows. Season 2 episode 3, named Saw, follows the case of a woman who commits a heinous crime that mirrored the plot of the gruesome Saw movie.
The episode begins with the introduction of Jennifer, a 35-year-old mother of two children, who lives in Chicago. In October 2010, Jennifer loses her job at a call center due to a company shutdown. Her world falls apart as she struggles to pay her bills and take care of her family.
One night, while watching the Saw movie, Jennifer finds inspiration for her next move. The Saw movie revolves around a killer who abducts people and puts them in life-threatening situations where they must complete gruesome tasks to survive.
Jennifer decides to execute a similar plan and seeks out someone whom she could use as a pawn. She selects her neighbor, Rhoni Reuter, a 42-year-old pregnant woman who was due to give birth to her child soon. Rhoni and Jennifer shared a friendly relationship, and Jennifer offered to host a baby shower for Rhoni, which Rhoni accepted.
On October 4, 2011, Rhoni was home when she heard the doorbell ring. She answered the door, and Jennifer, dressed in black, shot her several times, killing Rhoni and her unborn child. Rhoni's boyfriend, former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle, was at the gym at the time. He came home to find Rhoni lying dead on the living room floor.
The police began their investigation, and Jennifer became a prime suspect. Jennifer pretended to be innocent, playing the role of a grieving neighbor. However, during the police interrogation, Jennifer caved in and admitted her crime.
The episode examines Jennifer's motivations, exploring her mental state and her fascination with the Saw movie. It also delves into Rhoni's life, her relationship with Shaun Gayle, and how her death impacted her friends and family.
The show features interviews with law enforcement officials, forensic experts, and people who knew both the victim and the perpetrator. It also includes dramatized scenes that reenact the events leading up to the crime.
CopyCat Killers season 2 episode 3, Saw, is a chilling example of how movies and TV shows can influence people's behavior. It is a cautionary tale that highlights the importance of being mindful of what we watch and how it affects our psyche.
