After a successful premiere of its sixth season, Community returns with another entertaining episode titled "Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care". This episode follows the gang as they venture out into the world outside of their study room environment and deal with the struggles of adult life.
The episode opens with Abed struggling to come up with a viable television pilot for a school project he is working on. Meanwhile, Jeff is asked to help repair Greendale's lawnmower by the school's dean. Though Jeff initially brushes off the request, he eventually agrees with the motive of getting closer to the school board in a bid to regain his lawyer's license.
In a parallel storyline, Britta volunteers to provide postnatal care for a teenage mother she meets at the park. Struggling to balance her responsibilities as a new mother, the teenager finds solace in Britta's company, and the two form a close bond over the course of the episode.
As the episode progresses, the gang splits up as each member deals with their respective tasks. Abed focuses on his show, which he ultimately turns into a sitcom featuring Greendale students that he refers to as 'The Dean's Office'. Pierce's star turn in Abed's show is particularly entertaining, with the former putting on his method acting hat to deliver a hilarious and entertaining performance.
Jeff, on the other hand, ropes in Frankie to help him repair the lawnmower. However, as the task proves to be more complicated than anticipated, Jeff gets increasingly frustrated and eventually storms off in search of parts. His absence leads to some poignant character moments as Frankie and the dean bond over their common desire to help Greendale.
Britta, still dealing with the teenage mother, undergoes a character arc that further fleshes out her personality. We get to see the tender side of Britta as she engages with the young mother, providing her with emotional support and practical advice on how to take care of her child. The storyline also highlights the plight of teen mothers while simultaneously showcasing Britta's maternal instincts.
While the episode features some compelling character moments, it's also replete with some excellent humor. The standout moments are the ones featuring Abed's sitcom and Pierce's hilarious antics. From his over-the-top acting to his insistence on providing his own props, Pierce's performance provides a ton of laughs. There's also a hilarious running gag involving people repeatedly running over the lawnmower, which adds a lot to the episode's comedic value.
Overall, Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care is a highly entertaining episode of Community that features some excellent character moments, hilarious humor, and seamlessly weaves together different storylines. It's a testament to the show's skillful balance of humor and heart that it manages to be both entertaining and touching without ever feeling contrived. It's a must-watch for fans of the show and an excellent entry point for newcomers looking to get a taste of what the Community universe has to offer.
