As the study group at Greendale Community College progresses further into their second year together, tensions rise and relationships change. In the twelfth episode of season two, titled "Asian Population Studies," the group finds itself dealing with the potential departure of one of their own.
Shirley (played by Yvette Nicole Brown) reveals that she's pregnant with her ex-husband's child, and plans to remarry him. This news causes many of her friends to worry about her decision and the impact it will have on her future. The group also learns that Greendale is undergoing a review of the school's diversity, and that the committee may find the group's lack of diversity problematic.
Meanwhile, Jeff (played by Joel McHale) and Professor Chang (Ken Jeong) have conflicting opinions on the expectations for Chang's participation as a Spanish instructor. Jeff believes that Chang is endangering his students by teaching them poorly, while Chang feels that Jeff is meddling and doesn't understand his responsibilities as a professor.
These conflicts come to a head during the episode's climax, which sees the study group coming together to support Shirley, while also navigating their own issues with diversity and their relationships with each other.
"Asian Population Studies" is a powerful episode that showcases the compassion and loyalty of the study group as they navigate complicated personal and social issues. With excellent performances from the entire cast, it's a standout moment in the show's impressive second season.
