In the Cold Case season 1 episode titled "Greed," the Philadelphia police department's Cold Case Unit investigates the murder of a wealthy businessman, Edward Elkins (played by Michael Nouri). The episode first aired on April 4, 2004, and was directed by Lesli Linka Glatter.
The episode begins with a retrospective news clip about Elkins, who was found dead in his mansion's pool in 1989 with a gunshot wound. The initial investigation failed to turn up any crucial leads, and the case went cold for several years.
Present-day detectives Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris) and Scotty Valens (Danny Pino) are contacted by Elkins' daughter, Susan (Laura Cerón). She requests that they reopen her father's case and find out who killed him after so many years. Susan is still hurting from the loss of her father and feels like justice has not been served even after all these years.
Rush and Valens first visit Elkins' luxurious mansion, which has remained untouched since the murder. The detectives start questioning Elkins' loyal butler, Max (Peter Onorati), and his wife, Jane (Frances Fisher), who still live on the estate. Max has continued working for Susan, who inherited her father's business empire.
Rush and Valens also interview various people who were connected to Elkins, including his former business partner, his wife's ex-husband, and his children. Their investigation takes them to a nightclub, where they find out that Elkins was involved in some shady deals and frequently visited the establishment.
Through their investigations, the detectives piece together Elkins' financial activities and find out that he was heavily indebted to his business partner. They suspect that Elkins borrowed money from the wrong people, leading to his murder. But the investigation becomes even more complicated when they discover that Max and Jane might be hiding something.
As they dig deeper into the case, Rush and Valens come across some crucial evidence that puts Max into the spotlight as the prime suspect in the murder case. But as they talk to Max, they realize that he might not be the killer.
The first part of the episode is primarily dedicated to investigating the murder, but the second part shifts to the detectives' personal lives. Rush is still struggling with the grief of her sister's murder, which has left her unable to form close relationships with others. Meanwhile, Valens is coping with his disappointment after losing out on a promotion at work.
Overall, the episode "Greed" is an expertly crafted whodunit with well-crafted characters and a well-plotted storyline. The audience is invested in finding out who the killer is and what their motive was. The episode also sheds some light on the detectives' personal lives, which makes for an engaging watch.
