COBRA is an intense political drama set in modern-day Britain. The show explores the intricacies of government decision-making during a time of national crisis, and the high-pressure situations its characters find themselves in. Robert Carlyle leads the cast as the Prime Minister, Robert Sutherland. He's a stern, steely-eyed figure, and not one to suffer fools lightly. In the opening episode, Sutherland faces the most significant crisis of his tenure so far - a massive solar storm that's set to hit the UK imminently. With comms networks and power grids at risk of collapse, it's up to Sutherland and his team to take decisive action to protect the British people.
Aside from Carlyle's character, the rest of the main cast is comprised of government officials and advisors. Victoria Hamilton is Anna Marshall, the PM's Chief of Staff, and arguably his closest confidant. She's smart, strategic, and fiercely loyal - a valuable asset to Sutherland's team. However, her personal life is in disarray, and the stress of her job is beginning to take its toll.
Richard Dormer, meanwhile, plays the role of Fraser Walker, the head of the Civil Contingencies Committee - a group of experts tasked with planning for worst-case scenarios. He's a pragmatic, level-headed man, but also deeply empathetic. It's clear from the outset that the decisions he has to make will take a heavy toll on him, both professionally and personally.
Other notable cast members include David Haig, who plays Archie Glover-Morgan - a crisis management expert drafted in to help coordinate the government's response to the solar storm. Haig provides a touch of levity to the show, helping to break up the more tense moments with his quick wit and dry humor. Marsha Thomason also features as Francine Bridge, the Home Secretary, who has to navigate a tricky political landscape as she works to support the government's efforts.
As the series progresses, COBRA delves into the many challenges the UK government faces during a national emergency. There are numerous obstacles to overcome, including a lack of resources, government infighting, and disputes with other countries. Above all, the show explores the impact of these challenges on the characters, with their personal and professional lives often colliding in unexpected ways.
One of the most intriguing aspects of COBRA is its exploration of political power dynamics. The show offers a fascinating look at how decisions are made at the highest levels of government, with numerous stakeholders jostling for influence. From security services to business leaders, there are plenty of voices vying for attention - often with competing agendas.
Overall, COBRA is a gripping, high-stakes drama that offers a glimpse into the inner workings of government during a crisis. With an excellent cast, tense plotlines, and plenty of surprises along the way, it's a show that's well worth checking out for fans of the genre.
