Classroom of the Elite is an anime series that debuted in 2017. It is based on a light novel series of the same name written by Shōgo Kinugasa and illustrated by Shunsaku Tomose. The show follows the students of Class D, a group of underachievers at Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School, where they are training to become the future leaders of Japan. Unlike the other classes, Class D is consistently ranked at the bottom of the school and is looked down upon by both their teachers and fellow students.
The protagonist of the show is Kiyotaka Ayanokōji (voiced by Justin Briner), a calm and mysterious student who enters Class D at the start of the school year. He quickly becomes friends with the cheerful and outgoing Suzune Horikita (voiced by Felecia Angelle), who is determined to raise their class's ranking and prove that they are not the failures everyone thinks they are.
Throughout the course of the show, the students must navigate the challenges of both their rigorous curriculum and the cutthroat social hierarchy within the school. Each episode is filled with twists and turns as the students compete in various contests and examinations, all while trying to manipulate and outsmart their peers.
While the show deals with some heavy themes such as classism and elitism, it also has its fair share of lighthearted moments. The characters all have unique personalities and quirks that make them stand out, and their interactions with one another are often humorous and entertaining.
Along with Kiyotaka and Suzune, some of the standout characters include Kikyō Kushida (voiced by Sarah Wiedenheft), a friendly and popular classmate who may not be as innocent as she seems, and Kōhei Katsuragi (voiced by Brandon McInnis), a charismatic student from another class who takes a liking to Kiyotaka.
The animation in Classroom of the Elite is top-notch, with vibrant colors and detailed backgrounds that bring the school setting to life. The show also features a great soundtrack, with catchy opening and ending themes and a score that perfectly captures the tense and suspenseful moments.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the show is the way it slowly reveals the true nature of Kiyotaka's character. He starts off as a quiet and unremarkable student, but as the series progresses, it becomes clear that he is far more complex and capable than he first appears. This adds an extra layer of excitement to the show as viewers are constantly left guessing as to what his motives and intentions really are.
Overall, Classroom of the Elite is a must-watch for fans of anime who enjoy a mix of drama, suspense, and humor. While it may not be suitable for younger audiences due to some mature themes, it is a captivating and thought-provoking series that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
