The Sea Devils: Episode 1 is the ninth episode of the ninth season of the classic British television series Doctor Who. The episode opens with the Doctor and his new assistant, Jo Grant, landing the TARDIS on an island off the coast of England. The two soon discover that the island is home to a top-secret naval base and that strange things have been happening in the area surrounding it.
The Doctor and Jo disguise themselves as naval officers and infiltrate the base to try to learn more. They are soon discovered, however, and are taken prisoner by the base's commander, Captain Hart. While imprisoned, they learn that the navy has been tracking strange underwater craft that they believe to be Soviet submarines.
The Doctor believes that there may be something more to these crafts and decides to investigate further. With Jo's help, he escapes from captivity and sneaks into a nearby research facility where he discovers that the underwater crafts are actually being piloted by an ancient race of sea creatures known as the Sea Devils.
The Doctor and Jo race to warn the navy of the impending danger, but they are too late. The Sea Devils launch an attack on the naval base, and a fierce battle ensues. The Doctor, with the help of a sympathetic naval officer, is able to locate the Sea Devils' underground base and learns that they are planning to launch a full-scale invasion of Earth.
The episode ends with the Doctor and Jo devising a plan to stop the Sea Devils from carrying out their invasion. They know that they must act fast, or it could mean the end of humanity as we know it.
