The Doctor and Jo Grant continue their quest to deliver a vital message to the underground Solos colony, whose people are mutating into insect-like creatures. In Part 4 of The Mutants, they run into more obstacles along their dangerous journey. Meanwhile, the Marshal of Solos steps up his sinister plan to annihilate the colony and claim the planet's valuable resources for Earth's empire.
As they travel through the hazardous underground tunnels, the Doctor and Jo encounter some of the mutated Solonians, who are understandably wary of outsiders. However, the Doctor's peaceful intentions eventually win them over and he gains their trust. With their help, he finally manages to deliver his message to the colony's leader, Varan, who receives the news with shock and disbelief. He had believed that the Marshal was acting on the orders of the High Priest of their religious order, but now he realizes the truth: that the High Priest is actually dead and the Marshal is pursuing his own agenda.
Meanwhile, back on the surface, the Marshal continues to tighten his grip on power. He is convinced that the Doctor and Jo are conspiring with the Solonians and will stop at nothing to capture them. He sends his ruthless assassins, the trackers, after them, forcing the Doctor and Jo to flee into the treacherous wilderness. Along the way, they encounter more mutated Solonians, including their new ally Ky, who has been tasked with guiding them to safety.
As they make their way through the perilous terrain, the Doctor discovers that there is a deeper cause to the Solonians' mutation than he had previously thought. It turns out that their genetic code has been deliberately altered by a powerful technology, hidden deep within the planet. This technology has the power to transform any living organism into any other form, and it is this which has turned the Solonians into giant insect-like creatures. The Doctor realizes that this technology must be destroyed, not only to free the Solonians from their plight, but also to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.
As they travel further into the wilderness, the Doctor and Jo face even more danger. They are pursued relentlessly by the trackers, who are determined to capture them and bring them to justice. But the Doctor is resourceful and resilient, and he manages to outwit their attackers at every turn. With Ky's help, he uncovers the secret location of the technology and prepares to destroy it once and for all.
In the final climactic battle, the Doctor and his allies confront the Marshal and his army, fighting for the freedom of the Solonians and the future of the planet. The stakes are high, and the battle is fierce, but in the end, justice prevails. The Doctor defeats the Marshal and destroys the technology, freeing the Solonians from their mutation and ensuring that no one else can wield such terrifying power ever again.
