Clarissa Explains It All is an American sitcom that aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1994. The show revolves around the misadventures of Clarissa Darling, a teenage girl who breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience. In season 2 episode 4, titled "Clarissa's Crush," Clarissa develops a crush on a boy named Clifford Spleenhurfer.
The episode begins with Clarissa and her best friend Sam discussing their experiences with crushes. When Clarissa reveals her crush on Clifford, Sam is less than impressed, telling her that he's "just a guy." However, Clarissa is determined to get to know Clifford better, and starts to research everything she can find about him.
Clarissa's attempts to attract Clifford's attention lead to some hilarious mishaps. She tries to dress like him, but ends up looking like a clown. She tries to get a job at his family's store, but her interview is a disaster. Clarissa even tries to impress Clifford by getting involved in his favorite hobby, model trains, but ends up causing a train wreck.
Throughout the episode, Clarissa also deals with other issues. Her brother Ferguson buys a water bed, and Clarissa tries to convince her parents to let her have one too. Her dad is reluctant, but Clarissa manages to persuade him by pointing out that a water bed will make her room the coolest in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, Clarissa's mom is trying to revive her old rock band and gets mad when Clarissa and Ferguson refuse to be her roadies. In the end, Clarissa's mom realizes that family is more important than playing music, and she and her kids bond over a sing-along.
The climax of the episode comes when Clarissa finally gets up the nerve to ask Clifford out. She invites him to a party at her house, and he accepts. Clarissa is thrilled, but her excitement turns to panic when she realizes that the party coincides with the same night as another party that all of her friends are attending.
In the end, Clarissa's party is a disaster. Her parents embarrass her with their lame attempts at party games, and Clifford spends most of the night playing with the model trains instead of paying attention to her. Clarissa realizes that she was so obsessed with impressing Clifford that she forgot about the people who are truly important in her life. She resolves to be true to herself and not to change who she is just to get a boy's attention.
"Clarissa's Crush" is a fun and entertaining episode that deals with the universal experience of teenage crushes. It also has some important messages about being true to yourself and valuing your family and friends. Fans of the show will enjoy the classic 90s fashion, music, and humor that are hallmarks of Clarissa Explains It All.
