Tomoya Okazaki, a troubled and apathetic high school student, continues to struggle in his daily life as he encounters various obstacles at school and home. In "The First Step," the second episode of Clannad season 1, we see Tomoya attempt to form a new club in order to avoid his duties as a member of the basketball team.
However, his plans are quickly thwarted when he realizes that he needs at least five members to start a club. Despite his lack of enthusiasm, Tomoya decides to ask several girls to join his new club, including his classmate, Nagisa Furukawa, who suffers from a chronic illness that has prevented her from attending school for the past year.
As Tomoya tries to convince Nagisa to join his club, he learns more about her difficult past and her struggles with her illness. He also meets several other girls who may be interested in joining his club, including a shy and withdrawn girl named Kotomi Ichinose, and a talented violinist named Fuko Ibuki.
Throughout the episode, Tomoya begins to realize that there may be more to life than simply going through the motions, and that his actions can have a profound impact on the people around him. He also begins to develop a bond with Nagisa, as he sees how much she has overcome in the face of her illness.
Overall, "The First Step" is a touching and emotional episode of Clannad that explores themes of friendship, loss, and the power of human connection. With strong performances from its cast of characters and a compelling storyline, this episode is a must-watch for fans of the series and anyone who enjoys heartfelt drama with a touch of humor.
