In this episode of Cities of the Underworld season 3, host Don Wildman explores the ancient subterranean lairs of the barbarians, who were rogue soldiers and mercenaries that wreaked havoc during the fall of Rome. From the Carpathian Mountains to the catacombs beneath Naples, Wildman takes viewers on a journey through the dark and dangerous underground hideouts of these notorious warriors.

The episode begins with Wildman in Romania, where he visits the Turda Salt Mine, a massive underground complex that dates back to the Roman Empire. The mine was later used as a strategic base by the barbarians during their raids on nearby villages and towns. Wildman explores the twisting labyrinth of tunnels, caverns and galleries, marveling at the ancient engineering that created this vast underground city.

Next, Wildman heads to Naples, where he delves into the catacombs beneath the city. Here, he uncovers evidence of the barbarians' presence, including a network of tunnels that were used to smuggle contraband goods like wine and olive oil. Wildman also discovers a secret chamber where the barbarians may have hidden their loot.

Moving on to Germany, Wildman heads deep into the Harz Mountains, where he explores the Rammelsberg silver mine. This mine was once a major source of income for the Roman Empire, but it was later claimed by barbarian mercenaries who used the tunnels as a base for their raids. Wildman discovers evidence of their presence, including primitive tools and weapons, as well as evidence of mining operations carried out by these rough soldiers.

In Bulgaria, Wildman travels to the ancient town of Perperikon, which was once a thriving metropolis during the height of the Roman Empire. The town was later abandoned, but the underground tunnels and chambers remained intact. Wildman explores these dark and foreboding tunnels, where he uncovers evidence of the barbarians' presence, including graffiti and other marks left behind by the rough mercenaries.

Rounding out the episode, Wildman heads to Italy, where he visits the underground chambers of the Catacombs of San Gennaro. Here, he discovers evidence that the barbarians may have used the tunnels as a temporary refuge during their raids on nearby towns and cities. Wildman also explores the ancient Christian catacombs, where he marvels at the intricate carvings and frescoes that adorn the walls.

Throughout the episode, Wildman provides historical context and fascinating insights into the lives of the barbarians, their motivations and their methods for surviving in the harsh and unforgiving environments of the underground world. Viewers will be captivated by the gritty, raw and awe-inspiring footage of this dark and dangerous world, which is sure to leave them with a newfound appreciation for the indomitable spirit of the human race.
