Descent is the ninth episode of the sixth season of the American police procedural drama, Chicago PD. The episode first aired on NBC on November 21, 2018, and was written by Erika Green Swafford and directed by Constantine Makris.
The episode kicks off with Intelligence unit commander, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), getting a call from an old informant, who gives him a tip about a potentially huge drug deal that's about to go down in the city. Voight immediately assembles his team, including Detective Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), Detective Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and Detective Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), to stake out the location.
Meanwhile, Detective Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) is preparing his daughter Lexi's wedding. However, the happy occasion gets interrupted when he gets an unexpected visit from Internal Affairs (IA) agent Edwin Stillwell (Ian Bohen), who's been investigating his past actions. Stillwell informs Olinsky that he's trying to push the case forward and asks for his assistance in bringing Voight down.
Back at the stakeout, Intelligence manages to witness a mysterious figure exchanging a large stash of drugs with some shady characters. While they are in the middle of tailing him, things quickly spiral out of control as the suspect ends up in a high-speed chase with the team. Detective Halstead eventually manages to catch up to him, but it all goes downhill when he gets into an altercation, making way for the suspect to make his escape.
All of this is happening in the middle of Intelligence's battle with the FBI, who have been looking into Voight and his team's recent activities. The episode showcases the struggle between the two departments, with both sides trying to outmaneuver each other to get to the bottom of the drug trade and corruption that's been plaguing the city.
As the episode progresses, Olinsky and Voight's relationship is put to the test when Stillwell tries to use Olinsky to turn on Voight. Olinsky is faced with the test of loyalty, and he must make the difficult decision between saving his family and protecting his boss and team.
Meanwhile, Upton and Ruzek find themselves in a tight spot as they try to apprehend a young drug dealer who's been caught in the middle of the crossfire. The two detectives have to make a difficult decision when they find out that the young lad is also a victim of the corrupt system that surrounds them.
