In the twelfth episode of the fifth season of Chicago PD, titled "Captive," the team is called to investigate a case of kidnapping. The episode opens with a woman named Laura missing. Her fiancé, Jake, is frantic and tells the police that he paid a ransom but has not heard from the kidnapper since.
Intelligence looks into Laura's recent activities and finds out that she had a gambling addiction and was in debt to a notorious loan shark, Marco. They suspect that Marco had something to do with her disappearance and bring him in for questioning.
Meanwhile, Voight receives a surprising visit from his former partner and friend, Denny Woods, who offers him a deal to get intelligence out of trouble with the department. In exchange, Voight must give up a member of his team.
As the team continues to investigate Laura's disappearance, they find out that Laura was not kidnapped for money, but rather to be smuggled out of the country. The team races against time to find Laura before she is taken out of the country.
Meanwhile, Burgess receives a promotion and is offered a new job in the Intelligence Department's training academy. She must decide whether to take the promotion or stay with the team.
In another plotline, Atwater and Ruzek deal with the aftermath of putting their lives on the line during a shooting incident in the last episode. The two partners are at odds and struggle to work together.
Throughout the episode, the tension between the team members and Voight's loyalty to his team is tested. Will Voight take Woody's deal or will he remain loyal to his team? Will Laura be found before it is too late? Will Burgess take the promotion or stay with her team?
The episode ends with a twist that will leave viewers eager for the next episode.
