As the detectives begin to delve deeper into the case, they quickly realize that the victim's personal life was more complicated than they first thought. She had recently rekindled a relationship with an ex-boyfriend who was also the father of her child. This man, who had a history of drug abuse and violence, quickly becomes a suspect in the case.
Meanwhile, tension builds in the unit as Sergeant Voight's son, Justin, turns up in the station seeking refuge from a violent ex-girlfriend. Justin's presence causes friction between Voight and his team, particularly with Detective Lindsay who harbors her own personal animosity towards Voight.
Throughout the episode, the detectives work tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the shooting, while dealing with their own personal struggles. They are forced to confront their demons, both past and present, as they navigate the dangerous streets of Chicago.
