Ben reveals that he is being falsely accused of the murder of a prominent businessman, and despite his protests of innocence, he has been sentenced to hang in three days' time.

Cheyenne agrees to help Ben prove his innocence and launches an investigation into the murder. He begins by questioning the town's sheriff, who reveals that the victim, Frank Travers, was a wealthy and well-liked man in the community. Cheyenne is suspicious of this, and begins to investigate Travers' past. He discovers that Travers was not as innocent as he appeared, and had a number of enemies who may have had a motive to kill him.

Cheyenne's investigation leads him to Travers' wife, Laura (played by Kathleen Crowley), who is cold and distant. Laura reveals that she had been having an affair with Ben, and that Travers had found out about it and was threatening to ruin Ben's life.
