In Cheers season 6 episode 11, entitled "My Fair Clavin," the lovable but strange postal worker Cliff Clavin (played by John Ratzenberger) finds himself in need of a makeover. When he volunteers to help his mother win a political campaign, he realizes that his appearance and manners might be holding her back.
Enter Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer), the resident psychiatrist and intellectual at Cheers. With a clinical eye and a generous heart, Frasier takes Cliff under his wing and tries to teach him how to dress, speak, and act like a sophisticated gentleman. But as always in the world of Cheers, things don't go according to plan.
When Cliff shows up at a political fundraiser looking like a caricature of a stuffy aristocrat, his mother's opponents take advantage of his vulnerability and humiliate him in front of the crowd. Deciding to fight back, Cliff challenges his critics to a trivia contest, using his encyclopedic knowledge of obscure facts to outwit them and win the day.
Meanwhile, back at Cheers, the regulars are dealing with their own romantic dramas. Sam Malone (played by Ted Danson), the former baseball star turned bar owner, is torn between his feelings for his long-time colleague and friend Diane Chambers (played by Shelley Long) and his attraction to a beautiful new customer named Lauren (played by Tanya Roberts). Diane, for her part, is grappling with her insecurities and her fear of losing Sam forever.
As the night wears on and the tensions rise, the denizens of Cheers find themselves drawn into Cliff's battle of wits and buoyed by his unexpected triumph. With their support and encouragement, Cliff discovers that he doesn't need to change who he is in order to succeed, and that his unique talents and quirks are what make him special.
In the end, Cliff and his mother embrace each other in a heartfelt moment of victory, while Sam and Diane exchange a meaningful look and Lauren heads out into the cold Boston night, leaving the future uncertain but full of possibility. As always, Cheers reminds us that no matter what life throws our way, we can find comfort, laughter, and friendship at our local bar.
