After a surprising discovery that his girlfriend is engaged, Gary decides to end their relationship in this episode of Cheers season 5. However, when he sees her kissing someone else, he assumes that she has moved on and begins to feel jealous. After a talk with Coach, Gary decides to win her back by posing as the team's new goalie.
Meanwhile, Sam has his own love problems when he begins dating a woman who is withholding sex. Frustrated, he turns to Rebecca for advice and she convinces him to break up with his girlfriend. However, when he takes her advice, he quickly regrets it and tries to win her back.
The episode follows these two storylines as Gary and Sam navigate the ups and downs of their love lives. As always, the rest of the Cheers gang is there to offer their own opinions and support.
While the show is known primarily for its humorous moments, this episode also explores some deeper themes--including jealousy, heartbreak, and the fear of being alone. Each of the characters faces their own challenges and ultimately, must decide what is most important to them in their romantic relationships.
Despite the serious themes, the show still manages to maintain its light tone thanks to its witty writing and great performances from the cast. Throughout the episode, there are plenty of laughs to be had--especially as Gary tries to hide his identity as the new goalie and Sam struggles to understand his girlfriend's cold behavior.
Overall, the episode is a great example of what makes Cheers such a beloved sitcom.
