In the Cheers season 4 episode 26 titled "Strange Bedfellows (3)", the third part of a three-part series, the gang at Cheers is still reeling from the rocky romance between Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long). In this episode, Sam becomes desperate to win Diane back and decides to take a bold move: proposing to Diane.
Meanwhile, Carla (Rhea Perlman) discovers she is pregnant and struggles with how to tell her ex-husband, Nick (guest star Dan Hedaya), who is currently in prison. The news becomes public when Cliff (John Ratzenberger) accidentally spills the beans to the entire bar. Nick is released from prison just in time to hear the news, and he vows to win Carla back.
As Sam tries to get Diane to say yes to his proposal, Norm (George Wendt) tries to convince him to reconsider his decision. Norm believes that Diane will only reject the proposal and break Sam's heart.
While all of this is happening, Woody (Woody Harrelson) is trying to keep a secret from everyone: he's been living in Cheers since he moved to Boston and doesn't have anywhere else to go. He fears that if Carla finds out, she will kick him out.
As the episode progresses, tensions rise as everyone deals with their respective relationships. Sam and Diane have a heart-to-heart conversation about their former relationship and both come to the realization that they are better off apart. Carla and Nick have a heated argument about their past and future, which ends with Carla telling Nick that she's done with him for good. And Woody finally confesses his secret to Coach (Nicholas Colasanto), who assures Woody that he always has a home at Cheers.
The episode ends on a bittersweet note, with Sam and Diane acknowledging their love for each other while agreeing that they are not meant to be together. Carla starts to come to terms with her pregnancy and her future as a single mother. And Woody thanks Coach for accepting him into the Cheers family.
"Strange Bedfellows (3)" is a poignant and emotional episode that explores the complexities of love, relationships, and family. It showcases the phenomenal acting skills of the Cheers cast and brings a satisfying end to the love triangle between Sam, Diane, and the rest of the Cheers gang.
