When Sam Malone's old friend Dave Richards comes to visit, the former baseball player starts to feel inferior. Dave is successful, wealthy, and seems to be living the life of his dreams. Meanwhile, Sam is stuck running a bar in Boston and has failed to make it big in any other career. Feeling down, Sam makes a bet with Dave that he can guess the exact amount of money that's in a jar on the bar. Dave, who views the bet as a surefire way to take money from Sam, accepts the challenge.
As the night goes on, Sam struggles to guess the correct amount of money in the jar, and begins to feel the consequences of his bet. After losing a significant amount of money, Sam realizes that he cannot win the bet and refuses to guess any more. However, Dave insists that Sam keep guessing, and ups the ante by offering to double the amount of the bet.
At this point, the gang at Cheers gets involved in the bet, with Carla and Diane helping Sam to determine the amount of money in the jar. As a result of their help, the group eventually hits on the right number, and Sam wins the bet. However, Dave is not happy about losing, and begins to demand that Sam give the money back to him.
Sam refuses to give in to Dave's taunts, and instead tells Dave that he's tired of always being compared to his friends who have gone on to great success. He realizes that he needs to make peace with the fact that he's running a bar in Boston, and that he's happy with his life. In the end, Sam is able to stand up to Dave and prove to himself that he has nothing to be ashamed of.
Overall, this episode of Cheers deals with themes of insecurity and jealousy, and how we can often feel inferior when comparing ourselves to others. However, it also shows that we can find happiness and contentment in our own lives, regardless of whether we've achieved the same level of success as our peers. The episode is funny and heartwarming, showcasing the strong relationships between the characters at Cheers.
