In the third season of the beloved sitcom Cheers, episode 15 titled "King of the Hill" follows the regular crew of the bar as they deal with a rivalry between Sam and Gary's Olde Towne Tavern. As the two establishments try to steal each other's customers, the tension in the air is palpable and everyone is on edge.
At the start of the episode, we learn that Gary's Olde Towne Tavern has been trying to poach customers from Cheers by offering free drinks and different entertainment. Sam is not happy about this, and after some ribbing from the other regulars, he decides to up the ante. He offers a free trip to Cancun to any customer who can beat Gary in the bar's new "King of the Hill" game.
As the game begins, we see bar-goers from both bars competing for the prize. It involves a platform suspended above a miniature cityscape, and whoever can hold their ground against their opponent by pushing them off the platform wins. The competition is fierce, with both sides trying their hardest to be crowned "King of the Hill."
Throughout the episode, the usual cast of characters pop in and out of the bar with their own subplots. We see Carla trying to prove to everyone that she can be a better waitress than Diane, and Norm trying to find a job after his painting gig falls through. Meanwhile, Coach is trying to be unbiased as the game's referee, even though he secretly hopes that Sam will beat Gary.
As the tension around the game builds, we see tempers flare between the two establishments. Soon, the physical competition turns into a war of words, with both sides trying to outdo the other. Meanwhile, Sam starts to doubt his own abilities and asks Diane for advice on how to win back Cheers' business.
Finally, the episode reaches its climax as the two competitors face off for the final round of King of the Hill. The stakes are high, and both sides are determined to come out on top. The physical competition is intense, but in the end, only one bar can win.
Without giving too much away, "King of the Hill" is a classic Cheers episode that highlights the show's knack for witty humor and memorable characters. Despite the rivalry between the two bars, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that will leave viewers smiling. With its heartwarming storyline and clever writing, this episode is a great example of why Cheers remains a beloved television show decades after it first aired.
