In Cheers season 2 episode 9 "They Called Me Mayday," the bar is getting ready for a visit from a food critic and everyone is on their best behavior, except for Carla. Meanwhile, a man named Mayday comes into the bar claiming to be a former pilot who was shot down over the Pacific during World War II. He regales the regulars with tales of his heroism and bravery, but Diane becomes suspicious of his story and sets out to uncover the truth.
At the bar, Sam and Coach are busy trying to impress the food critic with their culinary skills. Carla, on the other hand, is up to her usual shenanigans, insulting customers and generally causing trouble. When Mayday walks in, he immediately captures everyone's attention with his larger-than-life personality and stories of his daring wartime missions.
Diane, however, sees through Mayday's bravado and starts to poke holes in his story. She questions his knowledge of aircraft and tactics, and even his physical appearance doesn't match up with the photos he shows her. As she delves deeper into his story, she begins to uncover a darker side to Mayday's past.
Meanwhile, Sam and Coach's attempts to impress the food critic are derailed when they realize they've been using expired ingredients. They scramble to salvage the situation, but their efforts only make things worse. Carla, sensing an opportunity to take advantage of the situation, steps in with her own unique brand of cooking and saves the day.
As Diane continues her investigation into Mayday, she uncovers a shocking revelation that threatens to expose him as a fraud. But before she can confront him, Mayday disappears without a trace.
In the end, the food critic gives the bar a glowing review, despite the mishaps in the kitchen. And while Mayday's true identity remains a mystery, the regulars at Cheers are left with a newfound appreciation for the power of storytelling and the importance of having a good bar to share it in.
