Manager Coach is the 8th episode of the second season of Cheers. In this episode, Sam hires a new manager for the bar- Coach’s old friend, Hayden Stone. This new manager has a lot of experience and a great reputation, but things start to go sour when he enters into a conflict with Coach over how the bar should be run.
Hayden Stone is confident and enthusiastic, but he quickly clashes with Coach’s more laid-back style. Hayden suggests a number of changes to the way things are done at the bar, but Coach is resistant to them. For example, Hayden wants to institute a new policy of not allowing customers to run up large tabs, in an effort to cut down on unpaid balances. Coach, however, feels that the customers should be trusted and that cracking down on them will make them feel unwelcome.
As the conflict between Hayden and Coach heats up, the rest of the staff begins to feel caught in the middle. Sam is torn between his loyalty to Coach and his desire to run a successful business, while Diane tries to mediate between the two men. Meanwhile, Carla is enjoying the fights between Hayden and Coach, hoping to profit from the chaos.
The episode escalates as Hayden decides to fire Coach, who is devastated by the news. However, when the regulars at the bar find out what has happened, they are outraged. They start a petition to get Coach reinstated, gathering signatures from all over the neighborhood.
Sam ultimately decides to take the petition to the board of directors, hoping to get Coach his job back. In a dramatic resolution, the board agrees to reinstate Coach, but Hayden is still convinced that his way is the right way to run the bar. He resigns from his position, leaving Sam and the rest of the staff to pick up the pieces.
Overall, Manager Coach is a great episode of Cheers that delves into one of the core themes of the show – the conflict between tradition and progress. Coach represents the old-fashioned values that many of the regulars at the bar hold dear, while Hayden represents the new ideas and strategies needed to compete in a changing world. The tension between these two viewpoints is palpable throughout the episode, and the resolution is satisfying and true to the spirit of the show. Fans of Cheers will definitely appreciate this episode, which is both funny and insightful.
