After a successful first season, Cheers season 2 premiered with an episode called Little Sister Don't Cha. In this episode, the regulars of the show become aware of Carla's little sister, Annette, who has come to Boston to stay with Carla. Carla is not too enthusiastic about her sister's visit, as she has always been jealous of the attention her little sister received growing up.
The first part of the episode involves the bar trying to convince Carla to let Annette stay with her instead of bouncing around from one sleeping place to another. Slowly they all convince Carla to let her stay with her, and so she does. However, Carla quickly realizes that Annette is starting to overshadow her in terms of attention, and it triggers her past jealousies to overtake her current conditions.
In the meantime, Sam is dealing with a frustrating situation. One of his former colleagues from the baseball world, Dave Richards, has stolen Sam's black book. The black book contains all of Sam's contacts and information on women. This particular episode saw Dave Richards making the rounds and crossing paths with most of the cast of Cheers. Each time Dave was confronted with the theft of the black book, he becomes more obnoxious and impossible to deal with.
As the episode progresses, Carla's insecurities reach such a point that she becomes desperate enough to resort to some desperate measures. She arranges a date for her little sister with Cliff, who is to take her to a fancy restaurant. Things turn out unexpectedly as Cliff becomes rapidly infatuated with Annette. It is a surprise to everyone, especially to Carla, considering their vast differences.
Meanwhile, Sam, along with the rest of the bar, is still trying to retrieve his book from Dave, but nothing seems to be going right for them. As Dave makes a complete mess of the bar, it becomes apparent that the only way to get the book back is to switch it for something Dave wants. They finally switch his baseball glove for the book back, but it turns out that they could have avoided the whole mess altogether as Sam's book was right in front of his eyes the entire time.
Finally, we see Carla's jealousy reaching intense levels as she storms into the restaurant where Cliff and her sister are having their dinner. As they try to solve the situation, various aspects of Carla's personality unfold before the audience. They see the pain of the past but also how jealous and toxic she can be.
Overall, Little Sister Don't Cha sets the tone for Season 2 of Cheers, delivering the humor and engaging storylines that propelled the show to become one of the most iconic sitcoms of the 1980's. Featuring a fantastic script and stellar performances from the cast, this episode showcased the chemistry between the show's many characters as they navigated the challenges that life throws at them. Whether dealing with family dynamics, romantic entanglements or the trials of everyday life, the regulars of Cheers are always there to support one another – usually with a cold beer in hand.
