One Hugs, the Other Doesn't is the 16th episode of the 10th season of the beloved sitcom Cheers. As the name suggests, the episode centers around a conflict between two characters over their differing opinions on physical affection.
The episode begins with the bar regulars discussing their plans for Valentine's Day. Woody and Kelly are excited to spend their first Valentine's Day together as a married couple, while Carla brags about her plans to spend the day alone. Meanwhile, Frasier frets over the perfect gift to give to his girlfriend, Lilith.
The conflict arises when Rebecca tries to hug Sam, who recoils in horror. Sam explains that he's not a fan of physical contact and prefers to keep things professional. Rebecca is hurt and confused by Sam's reaction, as she's always been a very affectionate person.
Later, Norm enters the bar and explains that he's been seeing a therapist to deal with his own aversion to hugs. He encourages Sam to do the same, but Sam stubbornly refuses to seek help.
Meanwhile, Lilith surprises Frasier with an expensive gift, causing him to panic about whether his own gift is good enough. He decides to give Lilith a book on the psychology of love, which she immediately dismisses as a cheap and thoughtless gift.
The episode culminates in a heartwarming moment of reconciliation. Rebecca apologizes to Sam for pushing him outside of his comfort zone and explains that her affection comes from a place of love, not just physical attraction. Sam, touched by her words, agrees to let her hug him again.
In the end, all of the characters learn valuable lessons about the importance of showing affection and communicating their feelings. One Hugs, the Other Doesn't is a classic episode of Cheers that showcases the show's knack for mixing humor with heartfelt moments of character growth.
