- 44 min
Chasing Monsters is an adventurous reality TV show exploring the mysteries of monster-like creatures lurking in the world's largest bodies of water. In season 2, episode 7, titled Nile Predators, host Cyril Chauquet brings viewers to the Nile River in Africa to hunt for some of the most dangerous creatures in the river system.
The episode begins with Cyril introducing the Nile River - one of the longest rivers in the world, spanning over 4,000 miles and flowing through 11 African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. Despite the incredible diversity of life the Nile sustains, the river can be a dangerous place, especially for those who are not familiar with what lies beneath its murky waters.
To get a better understanding of the creatures inhabiting the Nile River and how to catch them, Cyril consults with local experts and fishermen who have lived on the river their entire lives. Cyril learns that Nile crocodiles are a major threat to anyone who ventures into the river. The crocs can grow up to 18 feet long and have a reputation for being one of the most aggressive animals in Africa. Cyril also discovers that the river is home to some of the biggest catfish in the world - some can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh as much as a small car.
With the help of his local guides, Cyril sets out on his expedition to catch these predators. First, Cyril and his team attempt to catch a massive Nile perch. These fish are carnivorous and have razor-sharp teeth, making them a challenge to catch. Cyril uses different fishing techniques, including trolling, to attract the Nile perch. After several hours of trying, the team finally catches a massive Nile perch that is over 6 feet long and weighs more than 200 pounds.
Next, Cyril gets an up-close look at the Nile crocodile. Cyril is fascinated by their size and demeanor, but also extremely cautious. With the help of his guides, Cyril goes on a night hunt for Nile crocodiles using a specialized spotlight that reflects off their eyes. It's a tense and dangerous pursuit, but ultimately, Cyril is able to catch one of these massive crocs.
Finally, Cyril and his team attempt to catch a giant catfish known as the vundu. The vundu is one of the biggest catfish in the world and is notorious for putting up a fight. Cyril and his team use a baited rod, but after several hours, they're not having any luck. They switch gears and decide to try their luck with a spear. Cyril puts his fishing skills to the test and makes an incredible catch, spearing a massive 8-foot vundu catfish.
Throughout the episode, Cyril not only captures a number of fascinating creatures but also educates viewers on the importance of these predators to the ecosystem. Cyril highlights the crucial role these creatures play in balancing the river's ecology and why it's important to conserve their populations. The episode wraps up with Cyril reflecting on the incredible experience of fishing in the Nile River and the incredible predators he encountered along the way.
