Champions is a comedy television show on NBC, produced by Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy. The show premiered on March 8, 2018, for its first season, and it was canceled following the season. The show revolves around Vince, a charming but immature gym owner in Brooklyn, New York. After living an aimless life, Vince finds himself on the cusp of fatherhood when his high school fling, Priya (Mindy Kaling), comes in with a son he never knew he had, Michael (Josie Totah).
Michael is a 15-year-old boy who loves performing and wants to go to a performing arts high school. He's been raised by his mother and grandmother, but he now wants to live with Vince so that he can get closer to his dream. Vince is initially resistant to the idea of taking care of Michael but, with some persuasion from his brother, Matthew (Andy Favreau), and an agreement that Michael can attend a prestigious performing arts school, he agrees to keep Michael with him.
The show is a combination of a family comedy and workplace comedy. At Vince's gym, he has two trainers - the beautiful but ditzy Britney (Mouzam Makkar) and the knowledgeable and nerdy Cash (Anders Holm). With Michael now in their lives, the trio must learn how to navigate the new dynamic and also figure out how to raise a teenager with a strong personality.
Throughout the show's run, Michael struggles to adjust to his new life in Brooklyn and with Vince, who he initially resents for not being there for him before. Meanwhile, Vince struggles with his newfound fatherhood and learns how to be a responsible adult, with a lot of comedic mishaps along the way. The show also explores other topics like family, identity, and acceptance.
One of the standout aspects of the show is Josie Totah's performance as Michael. Totah's character is confident, sassy, and funny, with a talent for singing and dancing. Michael's coming out as transgender in the first episode of the show was also significant, as it made Totah one of the youngest transgender actresses to play a recurring role in a TV series.
Anders Holm, previously known for his work on Workaholics and The Mindy Project, also gives an excellent performance as Cash. His character is a bit of an oddball, but his intellect and quirkiness make him lovable, and he quickly becomes a fan favorite.
Mouzam Makkar brings a lot of charm and humor to her character, Britney. Britney is a genuinely delightful character, and Makkar's comedic timing is impeccable. Andy Favreau also gives a strong performance as Matthew. His character is supportive of both Vince and Michael, and he brings a balanced perspective to their situations.
Overall, Champions is a fun, lighthearted show that explores family dynamics and the challenges of growing up. The characters are all likable, which makes it easy to invest in their stories. With its ensemble cast and charming premise, Champions is a show worth checking out.
