In the second episode of Cedar Cove season one, titled "A House Divided," viewers are introduced to a number of new characters and storylines in the small town community of Cedar Cove.
The main plot of the episode centers around the Fairpoint family, who have recently moved to town and are causing quite a stir. Bob and Peggy Fairpoint have purchased the historic Cedar Rose Bed and Breakfast, which they plan to renovate and turn into a high-end boutique hotel. However, their plans are met with resistance from some of the other townspeople, including Jack Griffith, the owner of the local hardware store, who has a personal vendetta against Bob and is determined to make life difficult for him.
As tensions rise between the Fairpoints and the rest of Cedar Cove, Olivia Lockhart, the town's beloved judge, tries to mediate the situation while also dealing with personal issues of her own. She is struggling to come to terms with the recent end of her marriage, and is finding it difficult to move on and start a new chapter in her life.
Meanwhile, Olivia's best friend Grace Sherman is dealing with problems of a different nature. She is unhappy in her marriage to Dan, a successful businessman who is often away on business trips and doesn't seem to understand or appreciate her. When a new man comes into her life, Grace is forced to make some difficult decisions about her future.
Throughout the episode, viewers also get glimpses into the lives of other Cedar Cove residents, including Maryellen Sherman, Grace's daughter, who is trying to balance her job as a maid with her aspirations of becoming a writer; Justine Lockhart, Olivia's daughter, who is struggling to make sense of her past and figure out what she wants for her future; and Warren Saget, a wealthy businessman who is trying to get Olivia to agree to sell him her family's land.
