Cathedral of the Sea is a historical drama series set in 14th century Barcelona during the construction of the city's iconic Santa Maria del Mar cathedral. The first episode, titled Fugitivos, follows the story of a young peasant boy named Arnau Estanyol, who seeks refuge in the city after being accused of a crime he did not commit.
Arnau's troubles begin when his father is unjustly accused of stealing from the lord of the land and is sentenced to death. Despite his father's pleas of innocence, the lord refuses to listen and orders his execution. In a desperate attempt to save his son's life, Arnau's father entrusts him with a valuable ring and urges him to flee.
With the help of his childhood friend and love interest, Mar, Arnau manages to make his way to Barcelona, a city bustling with activity and teeming with hope. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse when the lord's soldiers catch up with him and accuse him of theft.
In a moment of pure desperation, Arnau seizes the opportunity to take refuge in the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral, a colossal structure that is being built by the city's citizens with their own hands. Arnau joins the hundreds of laborers who are working tirelessly day and night to construct the magnificent cathedral, in the hopes of finding safety and a new life for himself in the city.
As Arnau adjusts to the grueling demands of working in the construction site, he begins to forge new friendships and alliances with other laborers. However, his past soon catches up with him when his former lover - the daughter of the lord who had accused him of theft - arrives in the city and sets out to find him. Arnau's once peaceful existence in the cathedral is threatened, and he must fight to protect himself and his new friends from the wrath of his enemies.
The first episode of Cathedral of the Sea offers a gripping introduction to the series, with a strong focus on the protagonist's struggles to survive in a harsh and unforgiving world. The production values and attention to detail in recreating medieval Barcelona are impressive, as is the overall tone of the show, which strikes a balance between historical authenticity and engaging storytelling. Fugitivos sets the stage for what promises to be an intriguing and captivating journey through one of the most fascinating periods of European history.
