Jay has been talking to Anna for nine months, and he has fallen for her hard. The problem is, they have never met in person. Anna has told Jay that she loves him, but she always has an excuse for why they can't meet up. Anna claims to live in Texas, but Jay suspects that she might actually be much closer. He reached out to "Catfish" for help in uncovering the true identity of his online love interest.
Nev and Kamie start their investigation by trying to track down Anna's social media accounts. They quickly discover that Anna's Facebook profile is fake - all of her pictures are stock photos. However, Anna's Instagram account does seem to be legitimate. The only problem is, there are no pictures of Anna herself on the account. Kamie and Nev keep digging and they find an Instagram account belonging to a girl named Amber who lives in California. The only catch is that Amber's profile picture is a photo of Anna. Kamie and Nev suspect that Amber might be using Anna's pictures to catfish people.
They arrange a meeting with Jay to fill him in on what they have discovered. Jay is understandably devastated that the person he has been talking to for nine months might not be who she says she is. Kamie and Nev encourage Jay to end things with Anna and start moving on.
The next day, Kamie and Nev set out for California to try to find Amber. They search through various social media profiles and eventually find one belonging to Amber's cousin, Brittany. Brittany tells Kamie and Nev that Amber is a serial catfisher who has tricked numerous people online. She also reveals that Amber has a history of criminal behavior, including theft and fraud.
Kamie and Nev track down Amber's address and pay her a visit. Amber admits that she has been catfishing Jay and using Anna's pictures to do so. She tells Kamie and Nev that she never intended to hurt anyone and that she just enjoyed the attention she was getting from Jay. Kamie and Nev try to explain to her that her actions have real consequences for the people she is fooling.
Back in Texas, Jay is struggling to come to terms with the fact that Anna was a fake. He had invested so much time and effort into their relationship, and now he feels like he has nothing to show for it. Nev and Kamie video chat with Jay to try to help him move on. They encourage him to focus on the positive aspects of his life, like his family and friends.
Jay takes their advice to heart and decides to come clean with his friends and family about what happened. He holds a meeting at his church and opens up about how he was catfished. He is overwhelmed by the support he receives from his loved ones, and he realizes that he is not alone in this experience.
In the end, Kamie and Nev check in with Jay to see how he is doing. He tells them that he has learned a lot from the experience and that he is focused on moving forward. He is grateful to "Catfish" for helping him uncover the truth about Anna and for giving him the tools he needs to heal from the heartbreak.
