In episode 5 of season 7 of Catfish: The TV Show, the hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph assist a young man named Adam who fears that he has been catfished by a woman named Mary. Adam met Mary online and the two have been chatting and talking on the phone for almost a year. Adam believes that he is in love with Mary and is ready to take the next step in their relationship, but he has never met her in person and she refuses to video chat with him.
Adam's suspicions begin to grow when Mary constantly makes excuses not to meet in person, and seems hesitant to share any personal information with him. Nev and Max step in to help Adam get to the bottom of Mary's true identity and intentions. The trio begins investigating Mary by looking through her social media profiles and reaching out to her friends and family members.
Their investigation leads them to discover that Mary has been using fake photos and names. They also discover that Mary has been leading multiple men on at the same time, using each of them for her own personal gain. Adam is devastated to learn that the person he had fallen in love with was not who he thought she was and that their entire relationship was a lie.
Nev and Max confront Mary about her deception, and she admits to using fake names and photos. Mary claims that she was afraid to reveal her true identity to Adam because she feared rejection. However, she ultimately realizes the harm she has caused and apologizes for her actions.
Adam is heartbroken but grateful to Nev and Max for helping him uncover the truth. He acknowledges that while he was naive to fall for Mary's lies, he has learned a valuable lesson and is ready to move on from the experience.
