Mathan & Leah is the 29th episode of the 7th season of MTV's popular reality show, Catfish: The TV Show. The show follows individuals who have fallen in love with people they have met online and wish to meet in person. The episode centers around two individuals from Utah named Mathan and Leah.
Mathan is a 26-year-old who lives in his mother's house and has never had a girlfriend. He spends most of his time playing video games and using social media apps to connect with people. He claims to have fallen in love with a girl named Leah online, whom he met through a dating app. She claims to also live in Utah and is a frequent traveler. Mathan's best friend, Brandon, is convinced that Leah is a catfish and is using Mathan for his money or other gains.
Mathan firmly believes that Leah is real and, therefore, doesn't see the need to meet her in person. After reaching out to the show for help, Nev and Kamie, the show's hosts, meet up with Mathan and Brandon to learn more about the online relationship. Upon further inspection, the hosts discover that Leah has been using stock images and fabricated her story of being a frequent traveler.
Mathan is heartbroken and angry. He had invested a lot of time and energy into his online relationship and felt genuinely connected to Leah. He asks the hosts if they could help him locate the real person behind the fake profile. Kamie and Nev agreed to help him and decide to dig deeper into Leah's social media history.
After a thorough investigation, Kamie and Nev are able to track down the person behind Leah's profile. The person is, in fact, a young woman named Amber, who lives in Utah. She explains to the hosts that she created the profile to boost her self-esteem. She had just gotten out of a relationship and wanted to see if she could still attract men.
Understandably, Mathan is devastated and feels betrayed. However, he agrees to meet with Amber and hear her out. During their meeting, Amber apologizes for misleading Mathan and explains that she didn't mean to hurt him. To Mathan's surprise, Amber appears to be genuinely remorseful and even admits that he deserves someone better than her. Ultimately, Mathan decides to forgive Amber and moves on from the experience.
This episode of Catfish: The TV Show offers a cautionary tale for anyone who is involved in online relationships. It reminds viewers that people can easily create fake profiles and lead you on emotionally. However, the episode also highlights the importance of forgiveness and being able to move on from a bad experience.
