Spencer & Katy is the fifteenth episode of season 5 of Catfish: The TV Show. The episode follows Spencer, a young college student, as he discusses a relationship he's been having online with a girl named Katy. The two met on a social media platform and have been talking for two years. Spencer feels like he's fallen in love with Katy and wants to meet her in person, but she always seems to have an excuse for why they can't meet. Despite being suspicious of Katy's behavior, Spencer has given her the benefit of the doubt and continues to believe that she's real.
Max and Nev begin their investigation into Katy. They quickly discover that there are no traces of her online and that all of the photos she's sent to Spencer appear to be stock imagery. The two hosts become convinced that Spencer is being catfished. They inform Spencer of their suspicions and suggest that they meet up with him in person to help him uncover the truth behind Katy's identity. Spencer eagerly accepts the offer.
When Nev and Max arrive in Spencer's hometown, they meet up with him and begin gathering more information about Katy. They visit the address she's provided Spencer and discover that it's actually a Marriott hotel. They talk to the hotel staff, who confirm that they've never heard of anyone by the name of Katy staying there. The team also searches for Katy's phone number, but can't find any records of it.
Eventually, Nev and Max are able to trace the number back to a man named Cameron. They track him down and discover that he's the one behind the Katy persona. Cameron is hesitant to talk to the hosts at first, but eventually agrees to meet with them. Nev and Max confront him about his deceit and try to get to the bottom of why he would use a fake persona to talk to Spencer.
Cameron reveals that he's gay and that he created the Katy persona to live vicariously through her. He also explains that he never had any intention of hurting Spencer, but admits that he understands how his actions could have been hurtful. Spencer is disappointed to learn that the person he's been talking to for two years has been a fictitious character, but is relieved to finally know the truth.
Throughout the episode, Nev and Max provide guidance and support to Spencer as he processes the truth about his relationship with Katy. They encourage him to stay positive and to continue to believe in love. The episode ends with Spencer talking to Nev and Max about how he plans to move forward and find love in a more honest and authentic way.
Overall, Spencer & Katy is a thought-provoking and emotional episode of Catfish: The TV Show. It explores the dangers of online dating and catfishing, and provides a cautionary tale for viewers to be careful when interacting with strangers online. Nev and Max are once again shown to be empathetic and compassionate hosts, providing guidance and support to those who have been misled by others online.
