In Catfish: The TV Show season 1 episode 4, titled "Jasmine & Mike," Nev and Max receive an email from a young woman named Jasmine who fears that the man she's been talking to for over two years may not be who he says he is. Jasmine, a 21-year-old from Indiana, began talking to Mike when he messaged her on Facebook one day. Their conversations quickly escalated to phone calls and text messages, and Jasmine began to develop strong feelings for him.
Mike, who claimed to be a 23-year-old marine biologist living in California, seemed too good to be true. He was charming, intelligent, and had a great sense of humor. But Jasmine began to have doubts when Mike canceled on her multiple times when they had planned to meet up. She also became suspicious when she noticed that Mike's photos always seemed to be taken from the same angle.
Nev and Max get to work investigating Mike and quickly find out that he's not who Jasmine thinks he is. They discover that the man posing as Mike is actually a 31-year-old guy named Mhissy who lives in Chicago. Mhissy has been pretending to be Mike because he enjoys the attention and validation he gets from Jasmine. He's been using photos of a model named Chris and even made up an entire backstory about being a marine biologist to try and impress her.
When Nev and Max confront Mhissy about his deception, he becomes angry and defensive. He insists that he never had any intention of meeting Jasmine in person and that he only did it for fun. Jasmine is devastated when she finds out the truth but is also relieved to finally know the truth about the man she's been talking to for so long.
In the end, Nev and Max help Jasmine move on from the heartbreak of being catfished by giving her closure and reaffirming her self-worth. They also encourage her to be cautious when meeting people online and to always trust her instincts if something seems too good to be true.
