In season 3 episode 7 of Car Masters: Rust to Riches, titled "Proof of Concept," the team at Gotham Garage takes on a unique challenge – transforming a 1931 Model A Roadster into a modern-day speedster while maintaining the vehicle's vintage charm.
The episode kicks off with Constance Nunes, one of the show's skilled mechanics, introducing the Model A Roadster to the garage. The car is in rough shape, and the team jumps right in, beginning the process of restoring and transforming the vintage vehicle.
The first step in the transformation process is removing the car's original body and frame. The team opts to use a custom-built frame instead, which will allow for better handling and performance on the road. After removing the body and frame, the team dives into the fabrication, welding, and assembly process, working to bring the new frame to life.
As the build progresses, the team faces a few setbacks and challenges. One hurdle comes in the form of a misaligned sedan delivery roof that they plan to use for the Model A's roof. To overcome this issue, the team has to carefully cut and reshape the roof to fit the Model A perfectly.
Another challenge arises when they discover a significant issue with the car's drivetrain. The team has to rethink their plans and make some major modifications to make the car drivable.
Despite these challenges, the team perseveres, and the car begins to take shape. They add a custom rear axle and disc brakes, along with a new suspension system. Additionally, the team decides to give the car a more modern feel by installing a sleek interior with comfortable seating.
As the build nears completion, the team decides to swap out the car's original engine for something a bit more powerful. They opt for a GM LS3 engine, which will give the car the power it needs to be a true speedster. The team installs the engine, along with a new transmission and fuel system.
Finally, the moment of truth arrives. The team takes the newly transformed 1931 Model A Roadster out for a test drive to see how it performs. The car handles beautifully and provides a smooth, comfortable ride. The team couldn't be happier with the end result.
In the end, the team has successfully transformed the Model A from an old and worn-out vehicle into a modern-day speedster that still retains its vintage charm. The car's unique design and powerful engine make it a true showstopper, proving that with hard work and determination, anything is possible in the world of automotive restoration.
