Car Masters: Rust to Riches is a popular Netflix original series that offers a thrilling and entertaining look into the world of car restoration. This series follows the team at Gotham Garage as they take rusty, old and abandoned cars and turn them into stunning works of art.
In season 2 episode 1 titled “Electric Drag”, the team at Gotham Garage takes on one of the most challenging projects yet – to turn a 1964 Lincoln Continental into an electric car capable of winning a drag race.
With only six weeks to complete the project, the team sets out to remove the heavy V8 engine and replace it with an electric motor. The motor was sourced from a Tesla Model S, which was a perfect fit for the Lincoln Continental’s body.
The challenge for the team was to make the motor work perfectly with the car. The team had to install a new transmission, and the car’s frame had to be modified to accommodate the new electric motor. They also had to adapt the car's suspension to work with the extra weight of the batteries.
To make the car race-worthy, the team had to make it lighter and more aerodynamic. The car was stripped down to its bare bones, and all non-essential parts were removed. The team used advanced computer modelling techniques to design a new carbon fiber body that was both lightweight and aerodynamic.
The team faced several hurdles during the build. Working with electric technology was new, and finding the right parts for the car was a difficult task. The team also struggled to fit the large battery packs into the car's frame. They had to modify the frame and suspension multiple times to make it work.
Throughout the episode, we get an inside look at the team's work ethics and their ability to solve complex problems. We witness their dedication towards the project and their willingness to go the extra mile to make things work.
Once the build was complete, the team took the car for a test drive. The car performed exceptionally well. It had no engine noise, no emissions, and was incredibly fast. The team was thrilled with the result, and the car was ready to take on the drag race.
The episode culminates in the team taking the car to the drag race. The car’s electric motor provided instant torque, and it effortlessly out-accelerated its opponents. The car was a crowd-pleaser, and everyone was amazed at its speed and performance.
Overall, “Electric Drag” was an exciting episode that showcased the team's talent and passion for cars. The episode demonstrates how challenging it is to build an electric car from scratch, but with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.
