In the first episode of the British mystery series Campion, titled "Look to the Lady: Part 1," we are introduced to our protagonist, Albert Campion (played by Peter Davison). Campion is a gentleman detective who has a knack for getting himself mixed up in all sorts of criminal escapades, much to the consternation of his valet, Magersfontein Lugg (played by Brian Glover).
The episode opens with a sequence of a Rolls Royce driving through the countryside. Inside the car, we meet an elderly man named Sir Leo Merle, who is accompanied by his wife Lady Amanda Fitton (played by Faith Brook) and his secretary, Bill Barnabas (played by Peter Copley). As they make their way to their estate, they encounter a man who is the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Sir Leo stops to offer assistance, but as he leans over the victim he is himself attacked, drugged and left unconscious.
Meanwhile, Campion receives a cryptic message from an old friend that urges him to look into a matter involving Lady Amanda Fitton. He decides to investigate and heads to the Fitton estate, where he manages to secure a job as a secretary to Lady Amanda.
Campion's arrival at the estate coincides with the appearance of a group of armed invaders who attempt to kidnap Lady Amanda. However, with the help of Campion, Lugg, and the estate's staff, the assailants are fought off. Campion becomes increasingly suspicious of those around him and soon finds himself in the middle of a web of lies, deceit and danger that could turn fatal.
As the episode develops, we learn that Sir Leo, who is the trustee of a vast fortune left to Lady Amanda by her late father, has been embezzling her inheritance and is now involved with a group of criminals who are after the treasure. Lady Amanda, unaware of the theft, has a reputation for being generous with the less fortunate. She is known to have loaned money to a group of traveling performers, the Happy Elysium Company, who are planning a charity performance on the estate in return. However, as the treasure's location becomes increasingly uncertain and the company's performance approaches, the estate becomes a very hazardous place to be.
As Campion investigates, he begins to uncover a shocking truth that puts everyone in danger. He tries his best to solve the mystery and protect Lady Amanda while also figuring out who is behind the original message he received.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience in suspense until the conclusion of the two-part episode.
