Call the Midwife is a British drama series that follows the lives of midwives working in the poverty-stricken East End of London during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Season 10 episode 4 titled 'Episode 2' is a continuation of the previous episode that uncovers the challenges that the midwives face when dealing with complex medical situations and personal struggles.
The episode focuses primarily on Sister Julienne's investigation into a maternal death that occurred in the previous episode. She seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding the circumstances of the woman's death, which she believes was a result of gross negligence by medical professionals. Sister Julienne is convinced that the doctor involved in the case has done away with records and is seeking to cover up his mistake. Together with Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann) and Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett), they make it their mission to uncover the truth and hold the doctor accountable for his actions.
Meanwhile, Trixie Franklin (Helen George) encounters a pregnant woman who is struggling with her alcohol addiction. Trixie, who is now a recovering alcoholic, takes it upon herself to help the woman overcome her addiction and take control of her life. Her involvement with the woman also triggers memories of her own struggles with alcohol, which she had left behind when she entered recovery.
On a lighter note, Nurse Dyer (Leonie Elliot) and Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) take on the task of teaching a young girl how to read. The girl, who comes from a destitute family, is struggling to keep up with her studies and suffers from low self-esteem. The two midwives take the girl under their wing and encourage her to believe in herself and her abilities.
Another significant subplot in the episode is the relationship between Sister Hilda (Fenella Woolgar) and Mr. Watkins (Philip Wright), a patient who is recovering from surgery. Sister Hilda, who is normally very professional and reserved, develops a fondness for Mr. Watkins and begins to spend more time with him than necessary. The situation sparks gossip among the staff members, and some start to question the appropriateness of their relationship.
Overall, Call the Midwife season 10 episode 4 'Episode 2' is a poignant and emotionally nuanced exploration of the midwives' lives and the challenging situations they encounter. The episode presents complex medical and personal issues that the midwives face daily, highlighting their dedication and determination to make a difference in the lives of others. With excellent performances from the cast and expert direction from the production team, this episode is a compelling addition to the series.
